Michael Hanley, Ph.D.

Michael Hanley, Ph.D., Chairman

Dr. Hanley is Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Directors at  Celtaxsys. Prior to joining Celtaxsys full time in 2010, he was Chief Scientific Officer at publicly held Amylin Pharmaceuticals (AMLN, Nasdaq). He has held a number of leadership positions in the biotechnology industry, as well as academia and government service in a career spanning over 30 years, with nearly 200 patents and publications.   Prior to moving to the private sector, he held tenured positions at Imperial College, London, the Medical Research Council Laboratories, Cambridge, and the University of California at Davis Medical School, where he was Professor of Biological Chemistry. He has served on advisory or review panels for the National Institutes of Health, the Medical Research Council and Wellcome Trust of Great Britain, and for the governments of Australia, Singapore, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Denmark and Japan.  Dr. Hanley has played a key role in the founding and growth of start-ups, such as Resolvyx Pharmaceuticals, and is currently an advisor to Aileron Therapeutics, the Skaggs School of Pharmacy, San Diego, and the Stem Cell Partnering Initiative.

Dr. Perez is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Presidio Pharmaceuticals. He has been a Venture Partner of Bay City Capital since January 2007. . Prior to joining the firm, Dr. Perez was President and CEO of Berlex Biosciences (US arm of Schering AG) where he led the R&D efforts in the US as well as leading groups in Berlin (Germany) and Osaka (Japan), initiated multiple human clinical trials, and oversaw the execution of numerous collaborations, licensing deals, spin-outs and acquisitions, until leaving the company in 2006, upon its acquisition by Bayer. Dr. Perez is on the Board of Directors of Cleveland Biolabs (a public company, CBLI), Presidio Pharmaceuticals and F&P Pharmaceuticals (privately held companies), the Scientific Advisory Boards of Cardium (a public company, CDTP, CXM ), Vertex Pharmaceuticals (VRTX, Nasdaq), Glaxo GSK China and the Advisory Board for the Gladstone Institutes at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). He was a member of the Board of Directors of BayBio, until December 2008.

Dr. Perez received his medical degree in Buenos Aires, Argentina and completed his medical training at Beth Israel-Mount Sinai in New York City, as well as a fellowship in rheumatology and immunology at New York University (NYU). He joined the faculty at New York University (NYU) as an Assistant Professor of Medicine and was recruited to the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) in 1980. Dr. Perez was in the faculty at UCSF, as a Professor of Medicine, before joining industry in 1993. Dr. Perez has published extensively, has been elected to multiple scientific societies and nominated to the National Academy of Sciences.

Michael W. Masters is the founder and managing member of Masters Capital Management, a global investment management firm. He is an expert on the topic of commodities speculation and financial reform and has testified before many Congressional committees and government agencies, including the Senate Homeland Security Committee, the House Energy Subcommittee, the House and Senate Agriculture Committees, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), and the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission. Recently, he participated in joint SEC-CFTC roundtable discussions on a variety of security-based swaps issues.

Mr. Masters has made numerous appearances in media outlets around the world, including 60 Minutes, CBS News, CNBC, BBC, BBC Korea, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Bloomberg, Der Spiegel, and The Nikkei Veritas. He was profiled in the book “Stock Market Wizards” (by Jack D. Schwager, HarperCollins, Inc.).

Mr. Masters is the founder of Better Markets, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit, nonpartisan organization established to promote transparency and accountability in the financial markets for the public interest. He also serves on the boards of several charitable and private organizations and was the 2004 winner of the “Open Your Heart” award from Hedge Funds Care. Mr. Masters is a 1989 graduate of the University of Tennessee, where he was an All-American swimmer.

Mr. Lodal is the Chairman of Lodal & Company. He served as President of the Atlantic Council of the United States from October 2005 until the end of 2006. Previously, he served as Principal Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Policy and as a senior staff member of the National Security Council. He was Founder, Chairman, and CEO of Intelus Inc. and Co-Founder of American Management Systems, Inc. During the Nixon and Ford administrations, Mr. Lodal served on the White House staff as Deputy for Program Analysis to Henry A. Kissinger, and during the Johnson administration as Director of the NATO and General Purpose Force Analysis Division in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. Mr. Lodal is a member of the Board of Overseers of the Curtis Institute of Music, a Trustee of the American Boychoir, and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the International Institute of Strategic Studies. He was previously Executive Director of the Aspen Strategy Group and President of Group Health Association.
